About the Studio
Atelier Mlou hosts a creative and innovative symbiosis of design, consultancy and art. Driven by curiosity, firmly rooted in a research-based approach. We strive towards a world in which we treasure the connection and interaction with the living and non-living world around us.
Through the means of art, design, and technology we are, making the invisible tangible.
The studio offers and shares its expertise mainly through consultancy, coaching, public speaking and commissioned art projects.
With over 10+ years of experience, Malou has developed expertise in three different areas which gives her a diverse and well-rounded skill set. In the expertise overview, you will find the different areas in which she is specialised.
Concept development with a focus on innovation and sustainable future visions. A (more than) user-centred design approach is an essential angle.
A tangible translation of concepts into prototypes and systems. It is an iterative process in which we develop from quick and dirty prototyping and testing into a final finished product in which a cohesive end experience is key.
Tech integration into textiles, Sustainability focusing on modular design and object interaction, and User scenario design approach to ensure an optimal functional realisation.
The connecting and guiding force within projects. With over a decade of experience in working with interdisciplinary creative teams, the skill of stimulating the collaboration of different experts is highly developed. Communication with various stakeholders and team members, translating input into clear coordination and direction.
Stratagy & Communication
Overseeing the bigger picture, analysing systems and situations to transform this into clear tangible steps regarding internal development and internal and external communication. This translates into an advisory role in tech integration in textile, design innovation, sustainability, interaction and user-oriented strategies.
Guiding creative processes in a group format and one-on-one coaching. After years of collaboration with various institutions, Malou has found that the foundation of design thinking and contextualisation is essential for every creator, regardless of discipline.
Creative process and positioning
It is essential for creators to recognise the patterns in the bigger picture and determine their position in it. Therefore, a focus on guidance in contextualization. How do these insights translate into you as a creator and how does it manifest in your project and design? Sustainability is a big topic in this process. In these creative processes, Malou emphasizes the following points: a holistic approach to the interaction and relationship between object and user, more-than-human-centred design, and sustainability in the broadest sense.
Communication and presentation
How do you communicate your story? Visually, verbally and non-verbally are the three key aspects Malou offers guidance.
Guidance in future sustainable design processes. User perspectives, modular design, object interaction and a more than human-centred approach.
Sharing design perspectives, findings, and visions obtained through practice is a vital part of the studio. In 2018, Malou was one of the invited speakers for TEDx, and since then, public speaking has become an active role in her work. In collaboration with various platforms, she is active as a speaker, moderator, jury member, or panellist.
